Transform Your Front Yard With a Styled Porch

front+porch.jpg

Here at Yardzen, we’re always dreaming up ways to make our outdoor spaces more warm, inviting, and purposeful. And, one of the most used, yet overlooked spaces is the front porch—the focal point of many front yards.

Adding seasonal, beautiful, and functional elements to your front porch is an easy way to transform the look and feel of your whole front yard. So, we’ve rounded-up some of our favorite front porch accessories to help transform your home’s front into a beautiful and functional space where you can you can display even your broom and muddy garden clogs in style.

Seasonal touches

We love adding a seasonal touch to any front porch. Think: pumpkins in the fall and a small, light-adorned plant in the winter. There’s no need to go overboard. A couple of thoughtful pieces goes a long way in setting a mood.

Add a center piece

We like to think of setting a front porch like setting a table. In that spirit, a center piece is important for drawing the eye in. In the above Yardzen front yard, the potted lavender anchors the shot and ties the whole space together.

Make it welcoming

Add warmth and texture to any front porch by adding a wreath. We love this feather & wheat wreath. Made in Monterey, Calif. and woven with dried wheat and pheasant feathers, we love the juxtaposition of structure with a little bit of wild.

Get hooked

We’re big advocates of hooks and peg racks indoors and out for good reason. This accordion rack is the perfect catchall for hanging gloves, harvest baskets and keeping small, everyday gardening tools easily accessible.

Wipe up

Our criteria for the perfect doormat is both durable, easy to clean and never drifts from its post. This Knot Weave Doormat from Terrain is a favorite.

Add function

There’s something absolutely zen about sweeping but make that broom a hand-carved beauty and we’re betting your walkway will stay spotless all season. We’re obsessed with these hardwood octagonal handled beauties by Hannah Beatrice Quinn. Made in Santa Fe, New Mexico she says her brooms elevate this ordinary task and we’re buying it.

Table it

Keep the comforts of home outdoors with the perfect perch for a coffee mug, speaker or maybe even a potted herb or two. We love this Shaker Accent Table for its effortless styling.

Corral the clogs

We love bringing the outdoors in, but not necessarily the dirt and mud. Carving out a covered landing spot for muddy boots or gardening clogs with this Black Smith boot tray keeps things neat and tidy inside and out.

Easy does it

Speaking of muddy gardening clogs, we love this classic, earthy hued waterproof version by Hunter Boots. Easy to slip off and on at the front door, they’re lined in neoprene for comfort and durability. They’re available in men’s sizes and styles, too.

5 Simple Ideas for Rewilding Your Yard

Yardzen's CEO, Allison Messner, speaks with Design Director and Landscape Architect Kevin Lenhart on sustainable design and simple ways to rewild your yard. Small, smart choices can make a huge impact in your yard and for the entire planet. Watch their conversation in the video below:

Include Native and Climate Adapted Plants

You can support biodiversity and healthy ecosystems by using climate-adapted and habitat-supporting plants in your yard. If you’re not sure of which plant varieties are native to your area, consult your local nursery or visit Audobon.org and enter your zip code for  a list of plants native to your area.

Opt for Sustainable Hardscaping

Especially when it comes to decking, look for wood that has been certified by the Forrest Stewardship Council (FSC) - you'll know that wood was raised in a sustainable way. There are also composite material choices you can make: composite decking looks like wood, is extremely durable, and is made from partial ‘wood waste’ that gets compressed with plastics to create an earth-friendly material that will hold up in your space for years to come.

Choose Durable, Eco-Friendly Furniture
It’s simple: by purchasing durable furniture, you create less waste. If you don’t need to replace something every season, you stop contributing to the ‘single use’ cycle responsible for much of the planet’s waste issues. Our partner, Yardbird, not only creates durable outdoor furniture, but uses recycled ocean plastic to build it. The longer something lasts, the better - and if it’s made using recycled materials, even better!

Reduce Heat Islands

Heat islands are urbanized areas that experience higher temperatures due to concrete infrastructure that absorbs and re-emits the sun's heat and blocks airflow. It’s easy to combat the cycle in your own backyard by including native plants in your space and adding shady areas with trees, pergolas, or other sun-escape options.

Capture Rainwater

Rain barrels are an easy and affordable way to capture water from your roof and hold it for later use such as on lawns, gardens or indoor plants. When not collected, this becomes water runoff that collects pesticides, chemicals, and other materials.. By reducing water runoff, we reduce the waste that finds its way into our waterways.

New Yard For Summer? Experts Say to Get Started in the Cool Season

Spring and summer have come and gone, and maybe you never got around to checking that new landscaping plan off your to-do list. Well, we have good news: there are several upsides to designing, installing, and planting in the cool season. Here are the top reasons to get started now.

Screen Shot 2020-09-24 at 11.49.22 AM.png

Plants Thrive During Cooler months

"The cool season is a particularly good time to plant," says Yardzen's horticulturalist Zolene Quindoy.

Less Water: With many hours of sunshine, yet cooler temperatures, plants will thrive with less water during the fall. Getting plants into the cool soil before the onset of the rainy season is particularly beneficial in drought-prone regions. "Winter rains help to irrigate the landscape for free," she says.

Less Competition: In the fall, there are typically fewer plant-munching insects buzzing around, and less competition from weeds, too.

Easy to Establish: Have you ever put a beautiful, thriving plant in the ground only to see it wilt a couple of hours later? That's called transplant shock, and it's most likely to occur on hot days. An upside of planting in the fall? Milder temps reduce the chance of wilting due to transplant shock.

Happy Roots: Did you know that many plants still grow during the cool autumn season? You may not see it, she says, but that's because the roots are busy getting established and growing underground. "Fall planting allows new plants to extend their roots, which will help support new growth in the spring," she says. "These extra few months of root growth give fall-planted plants a head start."

Get ready for a Spring Install!

If you’re planning to wait for spring for your install, we still recommend getting started with your design this winter! That way, you’ll be through our design process and matched with an excellent contractor so you can break ground as soon as the weather starts to warm. Spring will be here before we know it!

Contractor Availability

As many of us know, landscape contractors get very busy come May, but according to Sean Marshall, the head of Yardzen’s Build team, “landscape contractors work all year in many parts of the country.” The cooler months are the perfect time to install your yard with a local, vetted contractor.

Yes, You can HardscapE During the Winter!

Hardscape is built to hold up to the elements, so yes, you can install hardscape during the fall and winter! That includes concrete, gravel, mulch, decks, fences; you name it! If the product is meant to live outside in any season, it can likely be installed outdoors in any season.

Enjoy Your Yard All year!

Who says you can't go outside when it's cold? At Yardzen, we believe that outdoor living is a year-round way of life, no matter where you live. With a couple of cozy touches, like blankets, rugs (here are our favorites), and firepits (more favorites), you can enjoy your outdoor space at almost any temperature.

Landscape Design Online: The Top 5 Benefits of Working with an Online Designer

One of the questions we get asked every day is, “what are the benefits of working with Yardzen over a traditional landscape designer?” We are an office of “traditional” landscapers, from architects to horticulturalists to contractors, so we understand the immense value of “the old way,” but we also see the challenges. From the exorbitant costs, to the hassle of phone calls and mid-day appointments, to outdated technology, we set out to make landscape design and build easier, faster, more affordable, and a little bit more fun. Here are the top five benefits of working with an online landscape designer. (Learn more at Why Yardzen.)

Wherever you live, you get access to amazing landscape designers

Wherever you live, Yardzen makes it possible to work with a top designer. Yardzen’s an online landscaping platform, which means that we can easily connect you to top designers who specialize in your aesthetic and uniquely understand your goals. That means you get access to exceptional landscape design talent online and aren’t limited to working with the designers located near you.

It’s a lot easier and takes far less time than the “old way”

At the beginning of the design process, you will upload photo and video of your yard, share inspiration photos, and tell us about your goals, budget, and priorities. (Don’t worry, this can all be done on your smartphone, and we give you plenty of instruction.) Beyond that, there’s very little time commitment from you. Unlike working with a traditional designer, you don’t have to meet at your property mid-day, you don’t have to spend hours on the phone, and you don’t have to visit your designer’s office. The process is entirely online and designed to be efficient and respectful of your time.

We use technology to create photorealistic designs

One element of the Yardzen process that truly sets us apart is the quality of our 3D renderings. Often mistaken for photographs, they leave little to the imagination and help you see the potential of your yard. (Check out our gallery and our Instagram to see more.) “Traditional” landscape designers generally just give you a CAD plan, which is essentially a blueprint, and hope you can visualize. We give you CAD plans, too, but we also deliver 3D renders, which will help you understand exactly what you’re getting in your design.

It’s less expensive

Historically, landscape design has only been accessible to people with the means to spend thousands—if not tens of thousands—on a design. Yardzen’s online landscape design cost is just a small fraction of that, from $495-$1495. (Learn more about our packages and pricing.)

We get your design BUILT

We believe that building your outdoor space should be just as easy as designing it. So, at the end of the design process, Yardzen will connect you to a vetted network of local landscape contractors to get your design in the ground. We stay involved throughout the build process—from making sure you get the bids you need to ensuring everything runs smoothly—at no additional cost.

Beyond all of this, the single most important thing to keep in mind is that design is fun, so enjoy the process. Start your landscape design online today!

How to Increase Your Home Value by 20% With Landscaping

yardzen_LosGatos0838 2.jpg

A well-painted front door attracts buyers, but think of what an outdoor living space could do.

You’ve heard of curb appeal, but what about landscape appeal? According to the American Society of Landscape Architects, homeowners can increase their home value by up to 20 percent by adding beautiful, functional, and sustainable landscaping to their property. So, where to start? Here are six ideas for adding garden equity to your property.

An outdoor fire pit and couches makes this outdoor living room, by Yardzen, the favorite family hang out.

An outdoor fire pit and couches makes this outdoor living room, by Yardzen, the favorite family hang out.

Build an outdoor living space: The best way to add square footage to a home (minus the hefty construction price-tag) is to create one or more outdoor living spaces. This can range from a paved, terraced patio with or without a pergola, outdoor sofas with a coffee table and or fire pit, an outdoor dining area, a pool, cedar tub or outdoor kitchen. Potential buyers will also see the value in a sweet little potting shed or playhouse for the kids. Whether you choose one or all of the above, surrounding these features with plants and trees will add privacy as well as natural color, warmth and texture.

A combination of synthetic turf, gravel, and climate-adapted plants make this Yardzen yard a close-to-no water backyard!

Plant a low-water garden: If you experience expensive water bills or live in a drought-prone zone, consider low-water landscaping. Once established, these gardens are relatively low maintenance and, thanks to water saving, low budget, too. When working with Yardzen, be sure to indicate that you’re interested in low-water, climate-adapted plants during the design phase! And, don’t forget features like beautiful and easy-to-maintain decomposed granite pathways and dry rivers, a lovely architectural feature that can help direct rainfall to a designated areas. But skip the water features, which can have the opposite effect on water saving, and opt for a few water-collecting rain barrels instead.

Screen Shot 2021-01-14 at 2.40.11 PM.png

Add curb appeal: The first thing someone sees when they pull up to your home: the front yard! For this reason, an improved front yard alone is estimated to increase your home value by up to 15%. What’s more, front yards tend to have a lower price tag than backyards—a new walkway, some climate-adapted plants, and an eye-catching design element, like a fence, front deck, or gathering space (you know we love social front yards), offers a lot of bang for your buck!

Add an edible garden: Raised beds brimming with organic herbs, fruits and vegetables are appealing to potential buyers who also see this feature as a money-saving investment. Use a naturally rot resistant wood such as cedar, but not pressure treated wood, which can leach chemicals into your plants. Also think about convenience, when possible. Raised beds close to a kitchen can make it easy to harvest lettuce for lunch or a few herbs for cooking. If you’re in the process of a sale, make sure the bed is planted with new or established plants. Let potential buyers see the harvest that’s in store.

Don’t forget the trees: There’s nothing quite like a tree-line street. Not only do trees add character to a property, they can provide shade, privacy and perhaps even the idyllic spot for a treehouse or tree swing. Plus, trees are critical to a healthy environment! Check with your local city or country maintenance department for a list of trees they recommend for your particular zone. Fruit trees can also be a beneficial addition, so long as they are planted in an area where dropping fruit won’t be a nuisance. Some fruit-bearing trees, like olive trees, even offer fruitless varieties, like the Olea europea above from Frantz Nursery.

In this Yardzen front yard, filled with native and climate adapted plants, like lavender, salvia, and yarrow, there are endless opportunities for cutting beautiful and fragrant arrangements.

Grow a cutting garden: From traditional roses to herbs and wildflowers, a cutting garden can be a practical and beautiful addition to a home’s exterior. Plant a mix of flowers that you love to bring indoors, being mindful of climate and water usage. Consider adding beneficial pollinator plants, too, which attract birds and insects. Cutting gardens need not be all flowers though. Consider mixing flowers among grasses and leafy green plants like Dusty Miller. You can even go a step further and add meandering stone pathways, antique benches and blooming arbors. And if you sell your home, don’t forget to include floral arrangements from your garden during the staging process!

How to Turn Your Yard Into an Ecosystem

By Maya Reddy, Yardzen Sustainability Intern

The benefits of curating an inviting yard, a space where people can safely and conveniently access the outdoors and experience their natural surroundings, are innumerable. From growing fresh vegetables to bonding with loved ones in a cozy and relaxing setting, personalized landscaping provides opportunities for people to interact with nature in meaningful ways. However, our yards have potential far beyond what they directly offer us as their owners. By strategically and sustainably landscaping our yards to better serve the ecosystems and communities we depend on, our yards can aid in reducing instances of drought, climate change, food deserts, and colony collapse.

Realizing these goals seems much more attainable when we look to nature, as the brilliant design, inclusive interdependence, and unwavering resilience characteristic of natural environments hold all the answers to the issues plaguing our communities today. From developing safe water cycling systems to producing nutritious food, turning to our ecosystems for blueprints is paramount. This concept of looking to nature to engineer solutions to existing problems is called  “biomimicry”, and it is the philosophy behind the remodeling of the Japanese bullet train, which was designed to emulate the aerodynamic shape of a kingfisher’s beak. Janine Benyus, author of Biomimicry (1997) and co-founder of the Biomimicry Institute, describes biomimicry as “the conscious emulation of life’s genius”.

This begs the question, how can our yards better emulate and honor the genius of nature by recreating the services our hardworking ecosystems bestow upon us everyday? Here are some simple ways you can model your yard after ecological processes while escalating what your yard can do for you and the planet!

Mindful Landscaping

Constructing a sustainable landscape requires thoughtfulness and intention, as well as location-specific guidance. The key is to select native plant species to adorn your yard. By opting to surround your home with native plants you not only ensure that your garden is more resilient, but you also support local wildlife and potentially endangered species. Alongside native plant species, climate-adapted plants also provide the benefit of resiliency and are a great choice for yard owners with sustainability in mind. Luckily, Yardzen is committed to including native and climate adapted plants in all designs, as demonstrated in our detailing of our American Rewilding Project

Additionally, thoughtful landscaping and placement of trees can provide a number of amazing benefits including natural insulation of the property. According to the US Department of Energy, a strategically planned landscaping design can reduce an unshaded home’s air conditioning costs by up to 50%, and tree-shaded neighborhoods enjoy significantly cooler daytime temperatures than their unshaded, treeless counterparts in the summer months!

Food Growth and Composting

The Farmstand- $348-$649

The Farmstand- $348-$649

Balanced ecosystems seamlessly cycle food, waste and nutrients, naturally embodying the ideal we refer to as “zero-waste”. Yards provide us with the incredible ability to grow our own food and practice ecological methods of food waste management. Cultivating a personal garden doesn’t have to be especially complicated; in fact many cost-effective and simple gardening accessories exist to help beginner gardeners get started. For smaller yards, vertical farming accessories are a compact and effective option to grow crops at home. Lettuce Grow’s Farmstand is capable of growing up to 36 crops at a time and can be used both outdoors and indoors which is especially functional for those living in areas that experience harsh winters. Subpod’s in-garden composting system is another noteworthy garden accessory that simplifies the composting process making it even easier for gardeners to repurpose their food waste into valuable fertilizer.

Rainwater Redirection and Reuse

Just as forests naturally collect, filter and manage rainwater, with the right planning your yard can also purify, redirect and recycle rainwater for use. Practices such as rainwater capture and redirection can reduce occurrences of flooding, soil erosion, and runoff pollution while conserving clean water and reducing your water bill. By choosing permeable surfaces during the landscaping process you can ensure that rainwater returns to the ground and enriches the soil, eventually replenishing groundwater resources. Rain barrels, downspouts, and even rain chains can help facilitate this process in your yard. Additionally, landscaping choices, like planting rain gardens, can aid productive rainwater redirection on your property.

Energy and Carbon Capture

Moreover, yards provide us with opportunities to mirror the extensive energy and carbon capture processes that take place in any given ecological system. A simple way to emulate energy capture is to choose renewable energy-driven products for accessories and fixtures that you choose to install in your yard, such as simple solar powered string lights or lampposts. Carbon sequestration is another process your yard can contribute to on a small scale. While installing man-made “Supertrees” that sequester carbon dioxide, like the stunning structures in Singapore’s national park Gardens by the Bay, is not exactly a practical option for your yard, increasing the volume of vegetation, preserving existing trees on your property, and planting native or climate adapted tree species in your yard are all great ways to contribute to carbon capture and combat climate change.

Backyard before & after

This Oklahoma client chose our Outdoor Transformation package to reimagine the exterior of their 1929 English-Tudor-style home. A fresh coat of paint (Benjamin Moore White Dove), new windows, and fully reimagined landscaping completely transform the front facade of their home.

For the backyard, our experts reimagined the space with an outdoor kitchen with a seating area, a conversation area around a fire pit, and garden beds in the unused space behind the garage. We kept plenty of grass for the dog to play (and made sure plants were dog-friendly as well).

Featured plants: Sideoats Gramma Grass, Spreading Yew, Purple Prairie Clover, Carex Praegracilis (No-Mow Lawn)
